Abstract

This study examines Kate Chopin’s short story ‘The Story of an Hour’ through Norman Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The narrative, penned during the late 1800s, is about Louise Mallard, a woman who experiences a fleeting yet intense sense of liberation when she learns that her Husband has died. But this is soon suppressed when he comes back to life. Applying Fairclough’s model, which consists of three levels-Text analysis, Discursive practice, and Social practice. This research examines how Chopin employs language to demonstrate and challenge gender roles and power in society. This research demonstrates that literature has the power to be a voice against unjust social norms. Literature also helps readers grasp how language in fiction can mirror and resist power and gender norms. The research is helpful for students, teachers, and anyone who is interested in feminist literature and discourse analysis.
